Bobby spent last week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina taking a family vacation at the beach. While we were there, we took a couple of educational trips. We stopped at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk, NC.
Wilbur and Orville Wright were the first to make and fly an airplane. This monument sits on top of the hill where the Wright Brothers started their flights.
Down a long field from this monument sit 4 small markers at different spots in the field to show where the flight ended. The Wright Brothers had 4 separate flights this historic day before their airplane was damaged.
The first and second flights only lasted about 12 seconds. Not very long.
This picture of the 4th marker isn't very clear because I used the zoom lens on my camera to take the picture since it was such a long walk. The last flight that their airplane made was 59 seconds long and then their plane was damaged.
Behind the tall memorial on top of the hill is a sculpture of the first flight by the Wright Brothers.
This sculpture was donated to the Wright Brothers Memorial by the State of North Carolina to celebrate the first airplane flight on December 17, 1903.
There is also an indoor museum at the Wright Brothers Memorial and there is a real life replica of their plane inside this museum.
We went shopping in the museum gift shop and bought two books for your class. One is about the Wright Brothers and one is about the history of flight. We hope that you find them enjoyable. Their is also a great website about the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

I also thought that I would share a couple of more pictures of Bobby's vacation with the class. We went to the Bodie Island Lighthouse which is also located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. When we got out of the car we saw this sign and we were definitely careful not to step in the grass.
Bobby's favorite part of our vacation was playing at the beach.
